Most people are surprised to find out the Australian Breastfeeding Association is a volunteer organisation!

Did you know?

  • Our breastfeeding counsellors and community educators are not paid for any work they do as Australian Breastfeeding Association volunteers.

  • Our volunteers work at home. When you phone them, whether through the Breastfeeding Helpline or via your group, they are taking your call in their family home, with their family right there! That will explain the odd sounds you might sometimes hear in the background!

  • Although our Helpline works with a roster system, there are times when the number of calls exceeds the number of counsellors on call, so you might get an engaged tone or message bank. You might like to try again in a short while.

  • When you hire one of our breast pumps, you will arrange to visit the home of a breastfeeding counsellor at a time that suits both families.

  • Groups are all different, depending on the needs and resources of it's members. So some will have more frequent activities than others, or provide services not available from other groups. It all comes down to (wo)man power!

  • Many of our volunteers not only juggle family life with their ABA work - they also throw in paid work, study or other community work too! It gets busy, sometimes!

  • Just about everything you see - from our publications to this very website - is the combined work of volunteer workers!
